Muddy Buddies

One of my favorite things about making Grandma Joyce’s Chex Mix for The Phoenix is that I have leftover Chex cereal to make this for me.  Muddy Buddies.  Puppy Chow.  Whatever you want to call it, none of its names sound appetizing, but don’t let that fool you.  This is so yummy.

Yes, it’s a common recipe, and extremely easy, but I wanted to share it just in case there’s anyone out there who hasn’t had it before.  It’s worth a try if you’re a fan of the chocolate-peanut butter combination.  And powdered sugar.

But is there anyone out there that doesn’t like powdered sugar?

(I sometimes might even use extra powdered sugar when I make this.  But don’t tell, pretty please.  I don’t want my hips to find out.)

Muddy Buddies

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes.
  • Ready in 15 Minutes.
  • Makes: 9 Cups
  • 9 cups chex cereal, whatever kind you like
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • In a large bowl, measure cereal. Set aside.
  • In a large microwaveable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on high for 1 minute. Stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer on until mixture is smooth when stirred. Stir in vanilla.
  • Pour mixture over cereal and stir until evenly coated.
  • You can then pour the powdered sugar over the top of the cereal and mix well to coat OR divide the cereal into a 1-gallon resealable bag with 3/4 cup powdered sugar and shake until well coated. Repeat with the second half of the cereal and powdered sugar.
  • Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
